Case Study: Aaron

Aaron was in his early 30’s when he was assessed at Breakthroughs. He was referred to us through his employer with concerns of ongoing communication errors and costly mistakes. Aaron reported a history of struggle throughout school and adulthood, especially with focus and memory. Aaron’s employer was interested in getting him help because of his great attitude, work ethic and commitment to the company.

The Root Causes

Aaron’s assessment showed that he had a number of skills functioning in the disabled range including organisational skills, vocabulary comprehension, visual memory, listening comprehension, processing speed and verbal skills. He had several areas of strength that had helped him to hide these areas of weakness from many people in his life.

The Solution

After his assessment, Breakthroughs in Learning created an Individualised Brain Development Program for Aaron to specifically target and develop the skills that were causing him to struggle at home, at work and socially. He drove over an hour each way to attended weekly therapy sessions and elected to borrow some of our resources to work on his skills at home as well.

The Results

Aaron made dramatic progress in several areas of comprehension and memory to both his and his employer’s excitement. Upon completion he only had 4 areas below the average range and had begun to take on leadership roles at work helping others. His welding skills improved to the point that he became the go to for difficult jobs and dangerous environments like nuclear plants. As Aaron’s job performance increased so did his pay and job satisfaction as he knew he now had the skills to handle whatever life threw at him.

"Kaleigh has not only smiled everyday, but has laughed and smiled every hour of every day. This is my daughter who wrote stories about suicide a year ago."

Kaleigh was a bright 11 year old girl who was experiencing considerable stress at home and at school. She had trouble remembering things, felt constant pressure and struggled in math. She had great difficulty using words to express herself to the point of not asking questions when she needed to and actively avoiding social situations. Her parents began to worry that if she was struggling this much already, university wasn't going to be an option.

Paul was in Grade 3 when he was assessed at Breakthroughs. He was two grades behind in reading and received frequent help from the special education teacher.

The classroom teacher told Paul's parents that he was lazy and just not trying. Paul was bullied and had a hard time making friends. A Psychological Assessment showed he was advanced in mathematics but several years behind in other areas.
